The country is located in the Indian Ocean, south of India. It is an island country composed of some 1200 coral islands. Only 200 islands are inhabited. The islands are known for their beaches and exotic marine life. The highest point in the Maldives is on the Wilingili islands in Addu Atoll.

You can find different types of fish in the waters surrounding the islands. Some popular varieties of fish that can be found here are batfish, spotted puller fish, black, blue-skinned snapper, trumpet and other fish. At bread is the main fruit, which is eaten here. You can find lots of coconut and palm trees in this country.

The capital of the county is Male. It is a city filled with huge buildings and numerous skyscrapers. You can also find many stores here. The cobbled streets of the island are lined with many palm trees that offer a picturesque view. The different attractions that can be found here include the Islamic Centre, Huskuru Miskyii and the National Museum.

The language of the country is Dhivehi. People, however, also speak English. Islam is the country's official religion. The Maldives have a hot and humid climate with temperatures ranging from 29 to 32 degree Celsius. The sun shines here almost throughout the year. Because of this reason, light clothing is preferred here. Women, however, are expected to wear decent clothes.

Entry to the Maldives is not difficult. No visa is required. A very important fact about Maldives is that the country has been severely affected by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. More than a hundred people were killed and many have lost their homes in this natural disaster.
