The Maldives is an exotic country
of around 1200 coral islands, located
on the Indian Ocean, north of the
equator. The country is known for
its sandy beaches and calm blue
waters of the Sea, which serve as
popular tourist attractions. All
this and more have a major impact
on the environment of Maldives.
The country has a rich marine and
tropical environment. Filled with
natural resources and lots of greenery,
the country is an ideal place to
experience the beauty of Mother
Nature. The country has taken many
measures to preserve the natural
beauty of its islands and thereby
maintain its bio-diversity. The
country does not permit excessive
exploitation of its natural resources.
The country launched the National
Action Plan for Environment in 1989
to protect the country against natural
disasters and risks.
The country is surrounded by a
dike that protects the country from
the rising sea level and climate
change. As the seawaters are filled
with exotic marine life, the country
does not permit the hunting and
killing of certain marine creatures
such as turtles and certain species
of tropical fish. Fishing sports,
is limited to the label and release
method.
Another major environmental program
launched by the company is the tree
million programs. It was introduced
in the year 1996 with the objective
of making the country greener. Under
this program, a large number of
nurseries were established in the
country and many trees have been
planted throughout the country.
Maldives as a country is extremely
clean. Maldives Clean program- activities
of waste collection were conducted
across the country. Systems waste
management was prepared and recycling
of waste products has become very
popular here.
Maldives has participated in a
number of international conferences
dealing with the issue of environmental
protection. The country participated
in the Second World Climate Conference
in 1990, Earth Summit held in Rio
de Janeiro in 1992 Kyoto Conference
and other summits.
